Sustainability Report
Return to JournalDodds & Shute was founded in 2015 on the desire to make a positive impact. We are focused on our responsibility to work in both a socially and environmentally sustainable way and we are optimistic that the design sector can evolve into a transparent and responsible force for change.
We are fully aware that time is a precious resource for our community of architects and designers. The undertaking of significant research into the environmental impact of different furniture types, companies or materials is an unrealistic luxury. Our focus over the past 3 years has been to do this work on their behalf.
We see the traditional shortcomings of our sector and the role it has played in turning a blind eye to these issues. Too many platforms are based upon outdated information models which do not reflect the modern-day requirements of designers looking to make quick, and educated, sustainable decisions.
We are delighted that almost 1000 Architect & Design practices have signed up to the UK Architects Declare Climate and Biodiversity Emergency Act, a commitment to instigate real behavioural changes in the way we all work. We see the role of our sector as key to achieving this goal.
Research has shown that the Furniture, Fixtures & Equipments fit out has a significant impact on the environmental performance of a building because of its comparatively short life span. The decisions that are made in this regard are fundamental and it is essential that more care and consideration is taken to what is put inside our homes, hotels, restaurants, offices, schools and developments.
Whilst aesthetics, price point, and functionality of course remain essential we are tired of the conversation revolving around these topics and not including discussion of the greater environmental impact behind a product or manufacturer.
Our idea is for a more transparent and informative way of sharing information, to have platforms that will enable users to filter with more valuable criteria; the sustainability performance of a business, where goods are manufactured, if made from FSC, recycled material, low VOC or designed for a circular economy, etc.
We believe that the research we have embarked on, culminating in the launch of our new website, will enable designers to more swiftly reach decisions to buy better products that meet more relevant criteria. This will be a tool to help them achieve more responsible goals and deliver sustainable projects.
For Dodds & Shute this undertaking has focussed around three key pillars of sustainability, and this document will touch upon each of these in chronological order. At various steps we have partnered with experts who have contributed an excellent level of research and insight, our special thanks go to them.
