Our Trip to Stockholm Design Fair
Return to JournalFebruary saw Dodds & Shute travel to Stockholmsmassan Design fair in Stockholm. The fair is widely regarded as the most important week of the year for Scandinavian design and as passionate followers of Scandinavian design we were very excited to see what would be on offer.
The fair is a landmark event in the region and sees the launch of many design innovations to an international audience, however, there is also a great deal of interest from the design obsessed and trend aware residents of Stockholm. Perhaps this is why we have always felt so fondly of this part of the world, an area where an appreciation and understanding of good design is ingrained in the culture and talented young designers are given the resources, encouragement and platform to be creative.
The results of this are clear to see as Scandinavia consistently produces the most exciting new design brands in the industry. At Dodds & Shute something that is core to the way we work is our passion for promoting new and exciting companies that deserve more recognition. Below we take a look at who impressed us the most at the fair.
Overgaard & Dyrman shared a stand with Thors Design and the furniture complimented wonderfully. Overgaard & Dyrman with their Wire collection are a contemporary design brand with a strong passion for traditional craftsmanship and refined details. Thors Design manufacture using upcycled, reclaimed Azobé wood from decommissioned Danish wharves. Each piece of furniture is a completely unique, living work of art and the wood used is more than a century old, of which 60 years have been spent partially submersed in the Danish sea.
Handvärk are an exciting new brand that have taken no shortcuts in their pursuit of design perfection. They work with marble, solid brass and aniline leather, materials that will only become more beautiful over time. These materials are handled with respect and dedication to embody the simplicity of their design which stays true to their Nordic DNA.
Gemla had a great stand displaying their take on the classic bentwood design. They have been crafting furniture for 150 years and their attention to detail have been combined with natural and durable materials. They love working with materials that age beautifully and believe in products that are long lasting and can be passed on, from generation to generation.
DK3 create uniquely designed furniture that is shaped by nature and produced by true Danish craftsmen. Uniting the finest carpentry traditions with modern and classical furniture design, the love of the organic material and uncompromising focus on quality is evident throughout the process and from the final product.
The ideals for Swedese are the same today as they have been for the past sixty years. To create beautiful furniture for the future, which build on the foundations of Scandinavian modern traditions, designed by forward-looking designers who share in the same timeless ideals.
Nikari was founded in 1967 and produces high quality furniture from local certified wood keeping in mind the principles of sustainable development. Manufacturing wooden furniture they concentrate on sustainability and quality both in design and production techniques.
