London Craft Week 2025

London Craft Week 2025

Return to Journal

With the month of May well underway, London saw well-known spaces open their doors to host talks, demonstrations and exhibitions for London Craft Week. A city-wide festival, celebrating passionate and extraordinary craftsmanship from suppliers, designers, artists, and others, from around the world.

Dodds & Shute had the pleasure of attending an event hosted by the family-owned Danish furniture company, Carl Hansen & Søn, in their Clerkenwell showroom. The block-printing demonstration by Mentsen, London-based Japanese design studio, had a core focus on sustainability and circular economy, one of our passions.

On the showroom’s first floor, nestled amongst Carl Hansen & Søn’s renowned CH24 chairs and Hunting Tables, were beautifully laid out ink, rollers, and recycled wood off-cuts from Danish wooden flooring company, Dinesen, ready to make themselves useful for block-printing and art making. Whilst talking about their showrooms’ products, Carl Hansen & Søn provided insight on how they help provide heating to their factory and over 400 homes near their factory in Gelsted, Denmark by turning their sawdust and other scraps into energy. Mentsen’s Yasuyuki and Risa explained their methods in how their mobiles and room dividers come from offcuts and broken pieces from Carl Hansen & Søn’s chairs during production. Specifically, how some of their mobiles and prints for the event were made using the negative off cuts from the wishbone segment from the Wishbone Chair we all know and love, and the natural paper cord from the same chair became the hinges in their room divider. We love seeing such innovative approaches to creating products from materials that would otherwise go to waste, instead creating value and beauty.

Overall, the creative workshop was a success and Dodds & Shute were more than happy to take part in an event that was hosted by a fellow sustainability-focused supplier that prides themselves on caring not only about design made beautifully but also made with longevity in mind. Getting to make something memorable with Mentsen and Dinesen was the cherry on top. With that said, if you find yourself in London during the next London Craft Week, make sure to stop by Carl Hansen & Søn as they take pride in offering innovative events focused on craftsmanship. We know that we are looking forward to seeing what they have in store for next year.
