Dodds & Shute announces B Corp™ Certification
Return to JournalWe are proud to announce that Dodds & Shute is a certified B Corp, recognising our commitment to design, responsibly sourced. We are delighted to be joining this global community of companies using business as a force for good.
To achieve B Corp certification, we have met high governance, social, and environmental standards, made a legal commitment to stakeholder governance, and are demonstrating accountability and transparency. All of this represents our commitments to goals outside of profit.
Our ongoing commitment
B Corp to us is a culmination of years of work to shift our business to increasingly focus on addressing key challenges that we see in the design industry. We believe the design sector should be beautiful inside and out. It is our mission to use our business to support better manufacturing processes that benefit people and don’t harm the environment. Our long-term targets, such as our net zero carbon commitment by 2035, set us on a path for ambitious change which will require collaboration with (and tough decisions) on our suppliers and clients.
All B Corps sign the Declaration of Interdependence as part of their certification. This makes a commitment to embody the values of the B Corp community and work towards a collective vision of business as a force for good (see statement on the left). This is ongoing work for us, and part of our DNA as a business. In fact, we must recertify to B Corp every three years!
We are so proud that Dodds & Shute is a certified B Corp. We will continue to strive to improve our business and work with our partners to do the same.
The B Impact Assessment and how we scored
The B Impact Assessment (BIA) is a digital tool to measure, manage and improve performance on five key areas: governance, workers, community, environment and customers. A company must receive a minimum score of 80 points to become a B Corp; we are proud to have achieved a score of 104.
Dodds & Shute first started using the BIA in 2018 to measure and understand our impacts and where we needed to improve. This is not an easy process; it has been 3 years in the making and a year of verification! We used the tool for a couple of years to help understand our impacts, and a year of formally completing the assessment.
One of the sections we scored particularly highly on (as a percentage of overall points available) is governance. This section assesses a company’s policies and practices pertaining to its mission, ethics, accountability and transparency. For us, this covers the extensive work we do to understand and monitor our supply chain through our Supplier Sustainability Audit and Code of Conduct. We are thrilled to have this work externally recognised. Read about our approach here.

What is B Corp?
“B” stands for Benefit for All. The global B Corp movement works to change our economic system to positively impact all stakeholders. To become certified, companies undergo a rigorous verification process which assesses the end-to-end impacts of the business including how operations affect workers, customers, communities, and the environment.
The UK is one of the fastest growing B Corp communities in the world, just having reached 1,000 certified companies. And, with over 500 B Corps, London is the city with the most B Corps in the world. Globally, brands include The Guardian, innocent, Patagonia, The Body Shop, Ben & Jerry’s, Tony’s Chocolonely, Aesop and Veja.
UK B Corps are strong performers. Compared to traditional businesses, 2021 data shows that B Corps have a faster growth in turnover (27% vs 5%) and employee headcount (14% vs 1%), greater levels of employee retention, engagement and diversity, higher levels of innovation and are more successful in securing equity finance.
