Sustainable product series: Dining Chairs
Return to JournalAt Dodds and Shute, we care deeply about understanding our supply chain – how furniture products are made, where, out of what materials and by whom. In 2018, we launched our supplier sustainability audit. We have now gathered data on over 225 FF&E manufacturers’ practices. Suppliers who score above 70% are considered on our sustainability ranking list.
Here are some of the dining chairs from our sustainable suppliers that we’ve been using on our projects lately.
Lara Chair, by L.Ercolani
Rising to prominence in post-war Britain, Ercol prioritises responsible timber sourcing, supply chain carbon reduction, and minimal packaging waste. Using high-quality hardwoods like ash, oak, and walnut, Ercol holds FSC and Grown in Britain (GIB) certifications. Locally sourced GIB timber shortens supply chains. Their award-winning factory integrates eco-friendly features, including natural lighting, soundproofing, motion-sensor lighting, and a biomass boiler powered by wood waste. Ercol focuses on responsible sourcing, waste reduction, and sustainability in materials and manufacturing.
Crafted for the hospitality industry, the Lara Chair’s elegant design complements both residential and commercial dining spaces.

Plan Chair, by Fredericia
Founded in 1911, Fredericia is a B Corp and ISO 14001 certified company dedicated to sustainable practices. With Greenguard certified materials and local production facilities in Fredericia and Svendborg, Denmark, the brand prioritises European suppliers to avoid overseas transport and subcontractors. Fredericia also champions waste reduction by collecting and sorting textile and leather waste, donating or repurposing materials for smaller products, or selling them to companies that can extend their use, ensuring a more sustainable approach to production.
The Plan Chair balances industrial elements with humanistic curves, offering a compact, comfortable design with a minimal footprint.
- Environmental Product Declaration, providing material transparency.
- Designed for disassembly.
- Low VOC water-based lacquer finish and powder coated steel frame.
We recently used the Plan Chair at the British Land Norton Folgate project. See more from this project here.

She Said Chair, by Mattiazzi
For 40 years, Mattiazzi has embraced sustainability with responsible material sourcing, energy-efficient production, and a commitment to environmental stewardship. Since March 2011, Mattiazzi has produced over 4 million kWh of energy through rooftop solar panels, avoiding approximately 2 million kilograms of CO₂ emissions and saving around 5,700 liters of oil. Their sustainability initiatives also include utilising waste shavings to heat their factory and implementing carbon-capture filtration systems to ensure that air re-entering the atmosphere is clean.
