Dodds & Shute had the recent privilege to be invited on a private tour of Savoir and their bedworks operation situated in west London. Savoir who are widely regarded as the manufacturer of the world’s most luxurious beds began life as part of the Savoy Hotel in 1905 and ever since they have been setting the benchmark for quality in the industry. The opportunity to go behind the scenes of a company with such heritage was something that was of huge interest to us.

Our journey started with the manufacturing of the divans and mattresses each made by one craftsman and tailored to the client’s precise needs. These beds can take from 40-180 hours to craft and require traditional upholstery skills such as star-lashing, stuff and stitching and side stitching tufting. Savoir have a passion for using only the finest quality materials to ensure that their clients experience the best possible night’s sleep, the impeccable qualities of the wool ensure the mattress has a natural elasticity thus maintaining its shape better over time and is breathable so it wicks away moisture and helps regulate body temperature.

Following on from the floor where all the processes are entirely handmade using traditional tools we ventured downstairs to see some of their impressive machinery. This included a fascinating and highly efficient pocket springing machine which manufactured springs of various tensile strengths, it then fed the springs onto a conveyer belt where two sewing machines running in opposite directions stitched the springs into a continuous line of canvas pockets.

Another remarkable machine that looked like it dated back to the industrial revolution was used to untwist the horse hairs that are then hand-teased onto the mattress, topper or box spring. Savoir are the only bed company to extensively use Argentinian horse tail rather than cheaper alternatives as it has a spring of unparalleled bounce and longevity. Millions of these hair springs go into just one bed, naturally hollow like wool, horse tail also wicks away moisture and helps regulate your temperature.

The attention to detail and care that goes into the manufacturing of these pieces was a pleasure to behold and demonstrated that Savoir truly is a company of fantastic heritage and tradition. It is all the more remarkable that such a company can exist in this industry of ours in modern day London, but it is their passion for creating pieces of such quality that ensures a happy and loyal clientele.
